Balaka, Malawi – In a remarkable display of unity, discipline, and community service, players and officials from both Balaka DHO Socials Medicals and the visiting Salima team took time before their highly anticipated match to clean the premises of Balaka District Hospital.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Balaka District Health Office (DHO), was carried out in the morning hours before the teams headed to ICI for the match. Players from both sides joined hands to sweep hospital corridors, pick up litter, and assist with general cleaning activities demonstrating the values of responsibility and giving back to the community.
“This was more than just football. It was about setting an example,” said a representative from the Balaka DHO Edward katukuma. “These young men are role models, and their actions today speak louder than any goal they might score.”
Balaka DHO Socials Medicals, the home side, have been in impressive form this season. They come into the match buoyed by their recent success in the district Presidential Cup final, where they triumphed over Pack & Go in a dramatic penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
The team is looking to leverage their strong momentum and home support at the 5,000 average capacity ICI Ground, but their off-the-pitch efforts have already made a powerful statement.
Officials from both teams emphasized that sports are not only about competition but also about fostering unity, discipline, and civic responsibility. The joint hospital cleaning activity has been widely praised by locals, hospital staff, and district leaders.
As fans filled the ICI later in the day, the sense of pride extended beyond football — it was a celebration of community spirit, respect, and the impact of sports beyond the pitch.
