GIRLS SPEAK OUT ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF MALAWI AS A NATION

I would say corruption. Our money is going in the wrong places, they get aid and money but they go to big fat politicians who pay themselves and give themselves unnecessary allowances.

1. As a Malawian girl, how do you view the progress of the nation?? Is the country developing?? If yes in what aspects and if not developing what should be done?

Sthokozile Chimango, Ndirande, Blantyre says:

- The nation is progressing poorly. Currently the nation's economy has just pushed with a 5% which is not a promising percentage. Looking at it under among countries within SADC, for it to move from its poverty then we need to make a 7% push in economy. We are therefore supposed to make sure that we are above the 7%. Such being the case, I can say the nation is not progressing. The nation must therefore find its own ways of manufacturing raw materials into processed and desirable products that can go on higher prices. This in return can help in exporting more and importing less goods and services. The nation must also improve roads across the country for easy transportation of goods and services making sure that businesses are not affected. It must also renovate the Chileka airport to initiate business

2. As a Malawian girl, what do you think are the major obstacles to Malawi’s development? What measures should be put in place in order to eliminate or curb those obstacles? By removing those obstacles how do you think Malawi would benefit?

Renee Harawa, Chilomoni, Blantyre says:

- I would say corruption. Our money is going in the wrong places, they get aid and money but they go to big fat politicians who pay themselves and give themselves unnecessary allowances. Also we misallocate money, we put it in all the wrong places instead of investing in the country’s economy. We have no idea on how to spend money

3. As a Malawian girl, what aspects of our country should the government focus on developing? And why should the government develop those fields?

Salome Chilembo, Mchengautuwa, Mzuzu says:

-I think the government should tackle on home industry which include agriculture and also involvement of youth in entrepreneurship.  Let’s take a look on our home industry, if we are to promote our own things produced by our fellow Malawians will reduce poverty since the same things we produce are utilized within and outside the country. They should also be high involvement of youth in entrepreneurship. Youths should be trained on how to manage or run businesses and should be given a starter pack, in such way most youth who are just staying out there will be earning something which may benefit them and the government. Apart from that there should also improve on education and employment. They should introduce courses which can benefit us in our country and then those young youths who have made it they should be given  a chance to be employed in the system on them to show case their skills knowledge and ideas.

4. As a Malawian girl, do you believe youths are aiding out in the development of the nation? If yes, in what are youths helping the nation to develop? If no, what can be done to increase youth participation in developing the country?

Chifundo tembo, area 49, Lilongwe says:

-I don’t believe they are, because once they graduate they follow what the elders tell them to do. It sucks because one cannot show their true potential. It’s like they work to survive and not because they are passionate about the work. On top of that, for many youths to change the country, it is mostly done by the education, so it will be better to change the education system to modify it into a state that it can motivate youths to develop the country.

5. As a Malawian girl, what do you think are the ways that Malawi as a nation can use to develop the country?

Christabel Chinkhombe, area 23, Lilongwe says:

-For a start, they can put our tax money into better and beneficial use than just throwing random parties. The government can also ensure that jobs are given to well qualified people and not just less qualified people because they are related or something. Another thing is that they should also stop selling land to the Chinese in the name of loans or infrastructure because in the end, the country won’t belong to us anymore. The other stuff is pretty obvious.
