Super League of Malawi (Sulom) says the promise it made to provide starter pack to the TNM Super League champions to take part in the Caf Champions League every year remains intact despite the financial crisis due to Covid-19.
Nyasa Big Bullets as champions confirmed their participation in the Caf Champions League for a third straight year but their dream hangs in balance after football was suspended due to Coronavirus.
Sulom president Tiya Somba-Banda said the potential sponsor of the starter pack has assured them that funds would be available for the champions to take part in the continental club competition once football resumes.
“The potential sponsor of the starter pack assured us that the funds would be available. We are very confident of getting the funds once football resumes,” Somba-Banda said.
The dates for the 2020 Caf Champions League are not yet known as the football calendar has been affected by Covid-19. Football faces uncertain future in major parts of the world due to the pandemic
Bullets Chief Administrator, Albert Chigoga hailed Sulom for maintaining the decision.
“This is walking the talk. It would be discouraging if Sulom would have used Covid-19 as a way of changing their decision,” Chigoga said.
Caf is also yet to open registration for the competition for this year’s tournament as the 2019 edition has not been completed due to the pandemic.
For two consecutive years, Bullets took part in the competition but crushed out in the preliminary round. In 2018, Bullets exited the competition after a 4-3 loss on post-match penalties to Gor Mahia of Kenya whereas last year they lost 2-1 to Platinum FC of Zimbabwe.
Lilongwe-based Blue Eagles expressed interest to take part in the Caf Confederation Cup this year after winning the Fisd Challenge Cup. However, the Police outfit has not received assurances from management. Last year, relegated Masters Security FC took part in the competition but lost 3-0 on aggregate to Proline FC of Uganda.
