The Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) has officially launched the 2020 Fresh Presidential Election campaign slated for on July 2, 2020.

The campaign was launched by Mec Chairperson, Jane Ansah, who indicated that the campaign period which started on May 2 will run to July 2 2020 at 6 o’clock in the morning.

She said the official campaign period is a time when all contesting candidates and political parties are free to sell themselves to the electorate.

“With respect to the global pandemic the coronavirus and various public health guidelines and restrictions in place, candidates will have to find other innovative ways of reaching out to the electorate,” Ansah said.

She stressed that Malawians want to see campaigns that will consolidate and strengthen the country’s democracy beyond individualism, ethnicity and regionalism.

“A sound manifesto should articulate achievable programmes that will enhance the development of our country and improve our well-being,” she added.

The electoral body has also warned every person who will be found committing electoral offences during the period indicating that if found guilty, the person risks a fine of up to K500, 000 and a jail term of up to five years.

The High Court sitting as a Constitutional Court nullified the 2019 presidential elections results due to irregularities that marred the process.

The court ordered a fresh poll within 150 days. However, Mec and Democratic Progressive Party(Dpp) appealed the Constitutional Court ruling.
