Chairperson for Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) Gift Trapence has given Malawi Police Service (MPS) seven days to arrest suspects who petrol bombed a UTM office in Area 22 housing a family, whose members were severely burnt.
He was speaking during the burial ceremony of Selemani Tambala, father in the family, who died Friday morning at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH).
“HRDC wants justice on the matter. Why should it take years for the police to arrest the suspects who have killed this poor family and yet it takes just hours to arrest other suspects? If police cannot act within seven days, HRDC will do demonstrations to demand for justice on the case,” Trapence said.
An in-law to the deceased, Mercy Wyson, said they have a lot of unanswered questions as there is nothing they have been told by the law enforcers regarding the perpetrators who petrol bombed her relations.
Selemani Tambala is the third person to die in the family, out of the seven victims who were admitted at KCH.
On Wednesday, United Nations secretary General António Guterres also condemned Malawi’s political violence ahead of the fresh presidential elections.
Government spokesperson Mark Botomani was quoted in the week as saying Capital Hill does not condone any form of violence, whether politically motivated or otherwise.
