Died in Police custody Buleya
The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has interdicted 13 of its officers implicated in the murder of Buleya Lule pending completion of a murder case the cops are answering at the High Court.
This has been confirmed through a wirelessss message signed by MPS Director of Human Resource Management and Development, Stain Kaliza.
Meanwhile, the High Court in Lilongwe has reserved its ruling to Friday, July 31 2020 on the bail application for the 13 police officers.
Lule, who was a suspect in the case of a missing boy with albinism in Dedza, died while in police custody in Lilongwe.
Lawyer for 12 of the accused officers Lughano Mwabutwa said Justice Ivy Kamanga will deliver the ruling after it Tuesday heard the application in chambers.
“The bail application has taken place. I cannot talk much as it would be sub-judice. Let’s wait and see; perhaps they can or cannot be granted bail,” he said.
The police officers were arrested on July 10 and are answering murder charges contrary to Section 209 of the Penal Code.
The Office of Director of Public Prosecution and the Magistrate Court committed the matter to the High Court.
An autopsy report which pathologist Charles Dzamalala released indicated that Lule was assaulted by various instruments that inflicted injury to the head. An iron or similar object was placed on a cloth over the skin rather than directly onto the skin around Lule’s left buttock.
